Warning! Spoilers ahead for Action Comics #1087!The very first outfitSupermanever wore has been revealed, and let’s just say it’s certainly a choice. It’sthe Summer of Supermanand DC Comics is covering all different points of his life, including his past, which reveals the outfit he bravely chose to reveal to the world in his big debut.
InAction Comics #1087by Mark Waid and Skylar Patridge, a young Clark and his parents visit Metropolis for the Expo of Tomorrow. Despite being excited about the expo, Clark is also itching to reveal his powers, going so far as to wear his first costume underneath his clothes.
That decision comes in handy as the expo is attacked by a villain named Raze, forcing Clark to debut Superboya bit earlier than planned. Clark fights valiantly in his first outfit, which featureslarge, oversized red trunks and matching red high-top sneakers instead of the boots he’d wear as Superman.
Superman’s First Costume Looks Like a Teenager Made It
Superman’s costume is often hardto get right. While most have an image of what the definitive Superman is supposed to look like, not everyone agrees on the details. For some, his red cape needs to include a yellow House of El crest on the back. For others, the cape must blend in with the collar of Superman’s suit instead of the shoulders. And when it comes to the red trunks, even DC Comics abandoned them for a few years before bringing them back in style. Needless to say,for Superman’s costume, it always comes down to the small details.
Of course, this outfit isn’t that bad. Honestly, Clark’s first attempt at his costume is a hell of a lot closer than Peter Parker’s was in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sure, the trunks are a little too big and having such a big belt is a bit of an odd choice. Not to mention the sneakers, while definitely age-appropriate, don’t seem as polished as a hero. But that does seem to be the point. Clark’s costume at this point was a work-in-progress, but because of his determination to do good,Superman revealed his first costume before he was 100% ready.
Superman’s First Costume Wasn’t Perfect, But It Didn’t Need to Be
Superboy Just Wanted to Help No Matter How He Looked
Is Clark’s first outfit perfect or going to please everyone? Almost certainly not. But Superman didn’t care how his costume looked. He just wanted to help and show the world what he could do as soon as possible. Sure, he might not be winning any fashion awards anytime soon, but if anyone is going to put noble deeds over personal appearance, it’d be Clark. While his first costume is still a few solid tweaks from becoming the iconic outfit it is today, it serves as a good reminder for what’s really important toSuperman.
