Supermassive Games, the prolific development team behindUntil DawnandThe Dark Pictures Anthologyseems to have trademarked yet another game, one that wasn’t featured as part of the developer’s previous trademarking spree. Instead, this new game seems to be a complete mystery at this time.

According to the studio’s trademark listing, the title of this new, as-of-yet unannounced game isThe Quarry, and it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be a part ofSupermassive Games' existing intellectual properties. That said, it’s worth remembering that a trademark doesn’t necessarily have to mean that this is a full AAA release, or thatThe Quarrywould be coming out anytime soon, for that matter.

The reason why it’s highly unlikely thatThe Quarryis another entry inThe Dark Pictures Anthologyis thatSupermassive Games trademarked five entirely newDark Picturesgames not that long ago, none of which was titled as such. In true Supermassive fashion, however, the official logo ofThe Quarryfeatures stylized lettering that may hint at the nature of the game in question. Though, at this time, it doesn’t seem particularly revealing.

What’s particularly interesting aboutThe Quarryis that this might bethe online multiplayer game from Supermassivethat the developer had been hiring for late in 2021. The job listing referenced combat and progression systems, making it sound as if the game was an RPG, or that it could lean towards something of that type. A far cry from the majority of Supermassive Games' previous (and future) output.

Even though hearing about a potential action RPG coming from Supermassive Games sounds atypical at first, there is certainly precedent for this to be the case. The team’s latestDark Picturesrelease,House of Asheswas similar toResident Evilin some scenes, for example. This may suggest that the developer has been hoping to broaden its output in the future, rather than sticking with a more dynamic Telltale gameplay system.

In fact,House of Ashesintroduced some new gameplay featuresto the establishedDark Picturesloop, such as difficulty settings, QTE tweaks, more dynamic camera angles, and the availability of the flashlight in most situations. It wouldn’t that strange to see the team at Supermassive testing certain features for its upcoming projects. WhetherThe QuarryisSupermassive Games' purported ARPG or not, however, only time can tell.
