Apparent Chrono Trigger Remake Reveal A Misunderstanding
According toGematsuon Bluesky, Yuji Horii’s accidental reveal was actually a misunderstanding; Horii himself never mentioned aChrono Triggerremake at Napoli Comicon. According to VOD footage of the event, it was Horii’s translator who accidentally made the “reveal.“Screen Rant’s original story continues below.
Yuji Horii, responsible for writing the scenario and supervising development of the legendaryChrono Trigger, has accidentally let it slip that a remake is in production. The Super Nintendo classic is often held among the greatest RPGs of all time, and though it has seen a handful of re-releases, has never been fully remade.
According to fans in attendance at Napoli Comicon,Horii accidentally mentioned aChrono Triggerremake, before being informed of his mistake and realizing what he’d done. Word was spread by Reddit userdf_tarocco_1, and the incident has been corroborated in another thread byTheFishyOne, who both claim to have been in the audience. Horii supposedly let it slip thatChrono Triggerwas receiving a remake, but when pressed further, said something along the lines of, “You have heard nothing” (via a translator at the event).
Chrono Trigger Remake May Already Be In Development
The Return Of An Icon
Square’s famed RPG was first released in 1995 for the Super Nintendo, and if Horii’s reaction was genuine, it would appear thatChrono Triggeris finally being remade.Chrono Triggeris a beloved product of Square’s so-called Dream Team, created by Horii, who is also responsible forDragon Quest, Hironobu Sakaguchi, who madeFinal Fantasy, and legendary, late artist Akira Toriyama, whose recognizable style gracesChrono Trigger,Dragon Quest, and, of course,Dragon Ball, among many more properties.
While independent corroboration seems pretty convincing, this is hardly official confirmation that Square Enix is moving forward with aChrono Triggerremake. As one of the big three, Horii is likely in the know about all the developments regardingChrono Trigger. He’s the CEO of a company called Armor Project, which has exclusively worked with Enix since before its merger with Square. He has continued to be a major figure in theDragon Questfranchise, and, if theChrono Triggerremake is real, would likely have a heavy hand in its direction.
It Would Not Be Surprising If A Chrono Trigger Remake Is Actually On The Way
Square Enix Is Having A Lot Of Remake Success
Square Enix working on aChrono Triggerremake would not be unexpected. The company has had great success remaking its iconic titles in recent years.Final Fantasy 7 RemakeandRebirthcompletely reimaginedtwo-thirds of the iconic PlayStation game, and theDragon Quest’s original Erdrick Trilogy has been remade with Square Enix’s HD-2D art style pioneered byOctopath Traveler.
Chrono Triggerhas not had the same continued relevance asFFandDQ(and only received one full sequel inChrono Cross), but it’s nonetheless well within the same pantheon of JRPGs.Square Enix recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, promising more projects for the franchise, including releases outside the medium of video games. AnyChrono Triggerremake that may be in production is clearly not yet ready to be officially revealed, but Yuji Horii may have accidentally spoiled the surprise.
