Warning: This article contains some spoilers for Wednesday season 2, part 1!
Netflix’sWednesdayis full of mysteries, but the introduction of Christopher Lloyd’s new character raises unexpected new questions. Lloyd is one of the new additions toWednesdayseason 2’s cast, and his long history of playing off-kilter roles makes him perfect for the mystery comedy series.
Wednesdayseason 2 sees Jenna Ortega’s titular character return to Nevermore Academy, where audiences are treated tonew Outcast speciesand a gripping new murder mystery. While Wednesday uncovers the Avian’s identity inWednesdayseason 2, part 1’s ending, the show raises plenty of other questions, among them the story behind Christopher Lloyd’s character.
Christopher Lloyd Plays Professor Orloff In Wednesday, But He’s Only A Head
Prior to the release ofWednesdayseason 2, part 1, Netflix had announced that Christopher Lloyd would be joining the cast as a long-running Nevermore professor. In fact,Lloyd’s casting inWednesdayhappened after he contacted a showrunner. Beyond his character name, however, the details on his casting were kept under wraps. Now his appearance in season 2 raises some big questions about the character’s backstory.
Wednesdayseason 2 explains that he is the head of biology, and audiences even see him teaching briefly. The series does not answer the most obvious question, though, of why he is just a head in a jar. Likewise, we have yet to learn anything about what outcast species Professor Orloff actually is and what brought him to Nevermore Academy.
The answers to these questions are a big part of his identity, andWednesdayseason 2, part 2 could explore them further. At the same time, though,Wednesdayhas created a wacky, wonderful world where its characters' oddities are simply part of the experience, and it’s enough to watch and enjoy, even if we don’t have all the answers yet.
Christopher Lloyd’s Character Keeps A Great Wednesday Casting Trend Alive
Despite the unanswered questions that Christopher Lloyd’s Professor Orloff raises, his casting continues a great trend started byWednesdayseason 1. Like Christina Ricci’s casting as Marilyn Thornhill in season 1, Lloyd’s appearance brings back a former cast member from Barry Sonnenfeld’s 1990sAddams Familymovies.
While Ricci played Wednesday Addams in Sonnenfeld’s films, making it fun to see her act opposite Ortega’s new version, Lloyd took on the role of Fester Addams in the ’90s movies. Both roles are equally strange and creative, and the addition of Professor Orloff is a great way of keeping that nod towards the older movies and their influence alive.
Wednesdayseason 2, part 2 will release on Netflix on June 11, 2025.
Given thatWednesdayhas already been renewed for season 3, it is possible that the series could continue the trend further with anotherAddams Familycast member. For now, though, it is a joy to see Christopher Lloyd return to theAddams Familyuniverse through hisWednesdaycharacter.
