Seth Green shares a disappointing update about his involvement in theBuffy the Vampire Slayerreboot. Airing from 1997-2003,Buffy the Vampire Slayerbecame one of the most iconic shows of its era. Sarah Michelle Gellar is confirmed to reprise her role in theupcomingBuffy the Vampire Slayerreboot, alongside a new Slayer played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong. Hulu has a pilot order for the show, which will be written by Nora and Lila Zuckerman and directed by Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao.

Green played Daniel “Oz” Osbourne for several years of the series. A recurring guest star in season 2, Green would become a full cast member in season 3.Green leftBuffy the Vampire Slayerearly in season 4to pursue other opportunities, and returned for two additional episodes, although one was just for a dream sequence.

Seth Green speaking as Oz in Buffy the Vampire Slayer

In an interview withComic Book Resources,Green reveals that he has not been contacted about returning as Oz. He states that he doesn’t believe the focus of the show is about bringing legacy characters back, but imagines that some will appear. He also acknowledges that anyone formally involved with the show is likely considering whether there would be a way for them to return. Check out his quote below:

I don’t know. I see what they’re doing right now with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Chloé Zhao. This is a very interesting way to put that character back in pop culture. I don’t think anybody’s emphasis is on returning legacy characters to the screen, but I have to imagine if the show worked well enough, and they were expanding that character’s awareness of other characters, there could be a way that other characters could show up.

I don’t expect any kind of like, big reunion episode, but I really love the kid they cast. So yeah, nobody’s talking to me about coming back on the show right now, just FYI. But I think everybody who worked on it would consider if there was a place for their character.

What This Means For The Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reboot

Oz & Other Legacy Characters Could Still Return

While Green’s comment is disappointing, it is still early days for the reboot. The show does not have a full series order yet, and thefirst table read forBuffy the Vampire Slayeronly happened on July 21. At the time of writing,Gellar is the only confirmed star to be returning, but she likely will not be the only legacy character featured in the reboot.

Gellar has stated that she wants tobring back deadBuffy the Vampire Slayercharacters. As Oz is still alive and well, his return would be much simpler. When Oz is last seen, he is trying to get a handle on his lycanthropy and control his werewolf side. Oz, among others, would be a welcome addition to the new show.

Our Take On Green’s Comments

It Would Be Great To See Oz Again

While Oz is a beloved character, he was often relegated to the background as one of the Scooby Gang. It could beinteresting to see how a new Slayer and her friends deal with interacting with a demon who isn’t inherently evil.

Even if/when formerBuffy the Vampire Slayerstars appear, it doesn’t need to be immediate. The show should create its own foundation before including too many characters. While the return of the legacy characters will absolutely be a highlight, the show needs to prove it can work on its own merits first.
