Per HBO Max,The Big Bang TheoryspinoffStuart Fails to Save the Universehas been given an official full series order. While we knew the spinoff would focus on hapless comic book store owner Stuart Bloom, we didn’t know much else. Now, we know that HBO Max is so confident inStuart Fails to Save the Universethat it’s greenlit a full seasonfor the spinoff before the pilot even airs.
Stuart Fails to Save the Universeis the third spinoff in the ever-growingBig Bang Theoryuniverse. HBO Max executives and creative team members gave several quotes in the press release, with the most entertaining coming from executive producer Zak Penn:
“I was on a vision quest in the most remote parts of the Amazon Rainforest when a carrier pigeon arrived with a note from Chuck Lorre asking if I wanted to help make a show that the characters from ‘Big Bang Theory’ would watch. I couldn’t resist that idea, so I packed up my yurt and hailed the next dirigible out. At the same time, Chuck sent an expedition to locate Bill Prady, who had been frozen with his shield across his chest in a block of arctic ice. The team assembled, we set out to make this insane show, which lives in a universe created by Chuck and Bill. I couldn’t be more honored to be working with these amazing people.”
What This Means For The Big Bang Theory Spinoff
HBO Max Is Confident In The Spinoff
Considering that Max - officially returned to its previous title of HBO Max as of today - has been quite liberal in giving the ax to TV shows and even completed movies in the years since David Zaslav took over as Warner Bros. Discovery CEO, the fact that HBO Max is so keen onStuart Fails to Save the Universeshows how confident execs are in the spinoff.
It’s great to see it get the straight-to-series order. The Big Bang Theoryuniverse has been a juggernaut, withYoung Sheldon, which wrapped its final season earlier this year, being as much of a hit as the flagship show. Meanwhile,Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriageseason 2 is heading our way in the fall after the freshman season of the second spinoff saw strong ratings and a growing audience.
Our Take On The Stuart Saves The Universe News
It’s The Riskiest Of The Big Bang Theory Spinoffs
TheStuart Fails to Save the Universeseries order is good news in another sense, as it’s arguably the most risky oftheBig Bang Theoryspinoffs. All three shows have been centered on Sheldon Cooper in some way:The Big Bang Theorybecame his show after a few seasons,Young Sheldontold his childhood origin story, andGeorgie & Mandycenters on his older brother.
Conversely,Stuart Failsis the firstTBBTshow not to focus on one of the members of the core group from the original or on main cast members from the previous spinoffs. Stuart Bloom was a side character inThe Big Bang Theory, and although his role expanded in later seasons, he remained a supporting character at best.
Perhaps that experimental nature is why Warner Bros. Discovery opted to put it on HBO Max from the start, rather than on CBS, like the other shows in the franchise. Regardless, with HBO Max looking to rebrand itself again and find a new identity, it’s promising that it seesStuart Fails to Save the Universeas part of those big plans.
