There’s no denying thatFortniteis one of the biggest, if notthebiggest, video game that’s currently available. However, it now has a serious challenger to its throne as the top battle royale game in the form ofApex Legendsfrom Respawn Entertainment, which has taken the gaming world by storm since its surprise launch last Monday. And as it turns out,Apex Legendsis actually on pace to become bigger thanFortniteif it is able to keep its momentum.

As announced by Respawn,Apex Legendshit 25 million playersjust one week after the servers went live, and has had around 2 million concurrent players. This puts it ahead ofFortnite’s numbers at the same time in its lifespan, as pointed out by analyst Thomas Rice. According to Rice, it tookFortnite41 days to hit the 20 million mark, soApexseems to be growing at a much faster rate.

Of course, it’s possibleApex Legends' growth will slow, but as of this writing, the game is showing no signs of slowing down. It’s become a huge hit with fans and on Twitch, and seems poised to be the next big thing in gaming. Of course, some of this is going to be dependent on whether or not Respawn is able to keepApex Legendssupported with regular content updates and special events to keep fans hooked, as we’ve seen Epic Games do withFortnite.

And as it turns out, Respawn has big plans to supportApex Legendsin the future. Next month, fans can look forward toApex Legendslaunching its first battle pass and first official “season” of content. It remains to be seen exactly whatApex Legends' first season will entail, but it will be exciting to see what Respawn delivers.

However,Apex Legendsdoes have one key factor working against it becoming bigger thanFortniteand that is the fact that it’s not available on as many platforms. At the time of writing,Fortniteis out for basically every current video game system, whereasApex Legendsis only on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. However, there aretalks of a mobile portforApex Legends, so that advantage may soon be gone.

In the meantime,Apex Legendsfans can keep themselves busy by refining their strategies and mastering their favorite Legend.

Apex Legendsis out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
