Dandadan’sEvil Eyemovie has set a record for the box office debut of an anime series, even surpassingSolo Leveling: ReAwakeningto claim the title. The record indicates that cinematic events for anime series could remain a profitable venture, even outside of Japan.
Dandadan: Evil Eyewas released in theaters on July 01, 2025, for a limited-time engagement. The movie is a compilation ofthe first three episodes of season 2, which is currently set to debut on June 13, 2025, providing an early peek at the second season for the most dedicated fans. It turns out that there are far more dedicatedDandadanfans than it would seem, however, as the official US box office totals from the weekend put it at $3.55 million, putting it ahead of almost every recent anime movie except forMy Hero Academia: You’re Next.

According to Box Office Mojo,Dandadan’s $3.55 million haul has put it ahead of a number of other popular series.Solo Leveling: ReAwakening, for example, came closest with $3.35 million.Overlord: The Sacred Kingdomgrossed a mere $1.65 million by comparison, whileBlue Lock: Episode Nagigrossed $1.85 million. While it didn’t quite top it, the Miku Hatsune movie,Colorful Stage!: The Moviecame in at $3.66 million in the US, just barely staying ahead ofDandadan.My Hero Academia: You’re Next,for reference, made $5.04 million across its run.
It’s an impressive performance for something as unusual asDandadan, compared to a series with slightly more widespread appeal. It once again shows that anime can bring in money at the box office and sets the stage forDemon Slayer’s much-hyped return to theaters later this summer.Dandadan’sEvil Eyemovie certainly had everything an anime fan could ask for, from flashy animation to incredible fight scenes and everything in between. And, it’s important to remember that fans turned out to see this, even knowing that these episodes would be streaming in a few weeks.
Evil Eye Teases More Adventures in Dandadan Season 2
The Movie’s Open Ending is a Perfect Connection to the Series
A big part ofDandadan’s success is undoubtedly due to its extremely strong performance during season 1. Fans had faith that the second season would be as good as the first, and theEvil Eyemovie went out of its way to establish that not only is it as good, it’s better. As an adaptation of the first three episodes of season 2,Evil Eyedidn’t quite finish the story arc, leaving a teasing ending that will no doubt have fans champing at the bit to see what happens next.
There’s certainly a lot going on inDandadanseason 2, with much of the Evil Eye arc still lying ahead. While the heroes may have escaped the immediate danger by the end ofEvil Eye, the problem of the Evil Eye spirit is still very much a problem, and will continue to be for some time. That’s all the more reason to tune intoDandadanseason 2 when it premieres in a few weeks.
