TheStreet Sharksfranchise is back in a new comic series ‘90s kids won’t want to miss, which will introduce the fan-favorite franchise to a whole new generation. “Don’t call it a comeback,”IDW Publishing saysin the synopsis forthe long-awaited sequel series; instead, it is as though the franchise was waiting for the world to be ready.
IGN has released a preview ofStreet Sharks#1, by the creative team of Stephanie Williams and Ariel Medei, which immediately throws readers back into the high-octane action of the series.
The pages set the tone for a wild adventure, one in which the roller-skating sharks will prove why they’ve never been forgotten, and should’ve never left.
Street Sharks Is Back Almost Three Decades After The Franchise Went Dormant
The originalStreet Sharksanimated series was produced to promote the accompanying line of Mattel action figures. ThoughStreet Sharkslasted only three years in the mid-1990s, the combination of the TV show and toys left a lasting impression on kids from that era. Now, in the era of IP revival, it is a no-brainer to bring the Street Sharks back.
The last decade has seen'90s franchises likePower Rangersfind new life in comics, andStreet Sharksis the latest to make a triumphant return, in what could end up being the definitive take on the franchise. Advanced material for the new comic suggests it will be a fun all-ages read, perfect for nostalgic millennial parents to share with their kids.
As the synopsis for the debut issue reads:
The first Street Sharks comic in more than 20 years brings you extreme stories and a fintastic time! But don’t call it a comeback: They’ve been waiting for everyone ELSE to get ready for more jawsome adventures!
The four Bolton Brothers were happy playing sports and meeting babes. But when a run-in with a mad scientist turned them into giant sharks, they only got COOLER!
Kick some serious fin with Ripster, the great white head of the pack; Streex, the rollerblading ladies’ man (er, ladies’ SHARK); Jab, the hammerhead who loooves using his noggin; and Big Slammu, the whale shark with the whale-sized muscles, on their newest adventure! They’ll need all the help they can get to stop their arch nemesis, Dr. Piranoid, from developing… THE PERFECT PREDATOR! Little do they know, it’s already too late to stop the grossest monster they’ve ever fought from being born!
IDW has been clear about calling this a continuation of originalStreet Sharkslore, which in itself serves as the perfect reason to go back and revisit the original ’90s cartoon, and if anyone still has their Street Sharks figures, to pull them out, dust them off, and put them on a prominent shelf.
The New “Street Sharks” Comic Caters To Nostalgic Readers And New, Younger Audiences Alike
The Street Sharks' memorable design, and their over-the-top nature, make it surprising that their tenure on TV was as short-lived as it was, and that the franchise has languished for decades. Yet it also accounts for the fact that they retain near-instant name recognition for many ’90s kids, as brief as their time in the cartoon limelight might have been.
All of that is to say, they have everything it takes to thrive in the comic medium. IDW is betting on their nostalgic draw to bring a built-in fan base to the series, while the book seems suited for new, younger readers as well, who will be the true judges of whether theStreet Sharksconcept is as awesome as people remember.
Street Sharks#1wil be available July 31, 2025 from IDW Publishing
