Warning: this article contains spoilers for A Minecraft Movie
One of the best parts ofA Minecraft Moviewas the introduction of Jack Black as Steve, who managed to elevate every scene he was in, quickly becoming the most beloved aspect of the movie. Even though most ofA Minecraft Movie’s reviewsskewed towards the negative side of the spectrum, Jack Black’s performance stood out as one of its best offerings. However, Steve’s story and character arc in the movie presents a problem for when the sequel inevitably comes out, one that the next film will invariably need to solve.
While most of thecharacters inA Minecraft Movieoffer fairly predictable payoffs, Jack Black’s Steve and his character arc was arguably the most memorable part of the film, and felt earned throughout the story. However, by theend ofA Minecraft Movie,Steve was put in a position where his inclusion in the sequel will need to be justified, or else his entire story in the first film would feel like it was just pointless.
Steve Willingly Leaves Overworld In A Minecraft Movie’s Ending
He Decides To Take His Talents Back To The Real World
Steve’s arc throughoutA Minecraft Moviewas very much rooted in Henry’s arc as well, as he learned that he should bring the creativity he showed in the Overworld to the real world, without worrying about how other people may judge him. Since that fear was what droveSteve to the Overworldin the first place, seeing Henry overcome his issues was able to convince Steve to give the real world another shot, causing him to leave the Minecraft world with the rest of the group.
While this was a fairly predictable ending for the character, it was still pretty well done, which wasmostly attributed to the fact that Jack Black was very entertainingas the character throughout the rest of the film. It tied into the central themes of not being afraid to be unique and creative, and while a lot of the dialogue was pretty ham-fisted and obvious, the moment still landed well enough, before leading intoA Minecraft Movie’s post-credits scenes, which paved the way for the sequel.
A Minecraft Sequel Will Inevitably Bring Steve Back To Overworld
Minecraft’s Sequel Will Need To Bring Steve Back To The Minecraft World
While Steve’s character arc left him in the real world, the next film in the series will have to find a way to bring the character back into theMinecraftworld. While no sequel has been officially confirmed, the massive success ofA Minecraft Moviemeans that it is bound to happen, and with how much people loved Jack Black in the film, and how important Steve is in the video game,he is bound to return as one of the central charactersin the future of the franchise.
A Minecraft Moviehas made over $700 million at the box office, with projections showing that it could earn over $1 billion, and the sequel is reportedly already being worked on.
Whether the rest of the cast will return is another question entirely, as Jason Momoa’s Garrett was the only other character who really made much of a splash with the movie’s audience. He could return, and the rest of the cast could as well, but, considering the fact thatA Minecraft Movieintroduced Alexin one of the post-credits scenes, it is much morelikely that Steve and Alex become the main leads of the next film, which will obviously need to take place in the Overworld once again.
Minecraft 2 Now Has To Figure Out A Believable Reason For Steve’s Overworld Return
Steve’s Return Could Make The Previous Film Feel Obsolete
WithA Minecraft Movie’s sequel in early production now, how Steve will end up returning to the Overworld is likely one of the biggest questions that will need an answer when the story resumes. The piglin threat was, seemingly, entirely defeated, leaving the Overworld in relative safety after Steve and his friends left, and they didn’t seem to have too much desire to return. However,A MinecraftMovie’s enderman scene could hintat plans for the sequel, and a new threat in the form of the ender dragon arising.
It would make sense for Steve, and potentially the others, to return, as they saved the Overworld from the previous major threat, and would be the first ones called on to save it again.
There are plenty of directions to go, but no matter what exactly happens, the next film will have to introduce a new enemy that is even more dangerousthanMalgosha and the piglinswere. At that point, it would make sense for Steve, and potentially the others, to return, as they saved the Overworld from the previous major threat, and would be the first ones called on to save it again. It’s a classic sequel set up, and an easy way forA Minecraft Movie’scontinuation to bring Steve back.
