When asked aboutGibbs' character growth inNCIS: Originsseason 2and beyond, co-showrunner David J. North toldTVLinethatthe team is hoping to grow Gibbs' character organically. That could mean that Gibbs loses his probie status sooner rather than later. As the new agent on the team, that is a big hurdle to cross. Read North’s comments below:
“We’re inching our way there, definitely, in a way that we think is honest for the character. I mean, just take the fact that in Season 1, we know Gibbs’ gut was churning a little bit about Bugs and thinking, ‘Maybe there’s more to this story?’ But Gibbs didn’t go down that path, he didn’t gnaw at Franks and say, ‘Hey, my gut…’ — and he learned in the end he was right. Those are all stepping stones toward becoming the Gibbs that we met in 2003.”
As North pointed out,young Gibbs already has some of the qualities that made old Gibbs so confident, and season 1 showed that. Season 2 could then be a natural progression from those moments, like learning to tell Franks his theories, rather than keeping them bottled up. This could result in a major promotion for Gibbs in season 2.
It Is Too Soon For Gibbs To Lose His Probie Status

David J. North remained tight-lipped about what organic character growth means in terms of job titles for Gibbs and the MCRT. However,losing his probie status and being promoted to a full-fledgedNCISagent is a major possibility. But as great as it seems, being promoted too soon could actually set the young agent back.
For one thing,it is too soon for Gibbs to lose his status as a probie. He is still new and has a lot to learn. His experiences inNCIS: Originsseason 1are further proof. Gibbs has only been an agent for one year and is just not ready to lose the probie status.
On the other hand,it seems like it might be time for him to lose his status ifNCIS: Originswants to follow canon. According toNCIS, Gibbs was part of the iconic Fed 5 team, which was made up of five highly skilled agents. The timing is right for him to join, but as a probie, it wouldn’t make sense.
The mystery remains about whetherNCIS: Originswill stick to canon with Gibbs joining the Fed 5 so soon after joining NIS, or whether he will retain his probie status a bit longer. Either way, Gibbs will have to lose the status eventually. But losing it too soon will not make sense for the natural progression of his confidence.
