The Masked Singeris known to be pure camp mixed with absurd fun. The judges are hilarious and witty, and they make some very fun guesses for who might be hiding under the masks. Following along and trying to figure out who the celebrities are is half the joy of the show. The other half is the musical performances, some of which are truly remarkable.
6Ant, “Just Give Me A Reason,” by Pink
Ant’s First Performance Was Full Of Emotion
Ant, a character from Group AonThe Masked Singerseason 13, delivered a thrilling performance for her first time at the mic. Ant’s version of “Just Give Me A Reason” by Pink was emotional and full of passion and depth. It was obvious that whoever was behind the mask had serious vocal chops.
Ant’s backstory provided more context into Ant’s performance, saying she’d been blacklisted from the business after knowing too many secrets of those who were rich and powerful. When Ant’s identity as Dannity Kane singer (and frequent Diddy critic) Aubrey O’Day was revealed, her first performance made a lot of sense. It spoke to the struggles she’s endured, which made it all the more powerful.
The Mad Scientist Monster’s renditionof Coldplay’s “The Scientist” was perfect in more ways than just the name. The Masked Scientist’s performance was quieter, a little more subdued, accompanied by a pianist and a darkened stage. Whoever is beneath the mask gave a countrified version of the song, adding in his own flavor.
Is the Mad Scientist actually a country singer? He sounds like it, and it will be exciting to find out who he is when his identity is revealed. Online rumors seem to think he’s a member of the country group Florida Georgia Line, but we won’t know for sure until he takes off the mask. The judges also seemed to love this slower, country version of the smash song.
4Paparazzo, “The Door,” by Teddy Swims
An Effortless, Dazzling Performance
Paparazzo’s performance of “The Door"by Teddy Swims was the perfect song to match his voice. He hit every note, and made it his own. It’s a great song, and Paparazzo nailed his performance. It seemed obvious that the person under the mask was a professional singer, so it was shocking to find out that it was actually sitcom star Matthew Lawrence under there. He was eliminated during episode 10, but he left an impact based on performances like this one.
3Coral, “Luck Be A Lady,” by Frank Sinatra
The Vegas Set Put This Over The Top
Coral’s performance of Frank Sinatra’s classic, “Luck Be A Lady,” was a favorite because of Coral’s vocals and the production value of her set. The Las Vegas imagery was captivating. The set came alive with glittering buildings and giant diamonds, perfectly fitting for a Las Vegas anthem like “Luck Be A Lady.”
The crowd seemed to really enjoy it, as did the judges. Whoever is under that mask can carry a tune, and carry a live performance. Also, props to the backup dancers for adding to the spectacle of this performance.
2Yorkie, “Stop! In the Name of Love,” by The Supremes
Erika Jayne Wasn’t Fooling Anyone
The point of The Masked Singer is to mask the celebrity’s identity until they are revealed, butThe Real Housewives Of Beverly HillsstarErika Jayne wasn’t fooling anyoneunder Yorkie’s mask. Her voice is easily identifiable, and her clues only reinforced that it was her under there. The second she mentioned Beverly Hills, a clue was given about it being Erika under there.
Still, it was engaging seeing Erika out there giving it her all. Her “Stop! In The Name Of Love” performance pulled out all the stops, and while it wasn’t the best performance on the show, the audience and judges could feel Erika’s passion underneath it all. She’s a performer, and that shone through, with or without a mask.
1Boogie Woogie, “I Believe In A Thing Called Love,” by The Darkness
Boogie Woogie’s Best Performance Of The Season So Far
Boogie Woogie has been a frontrunneron this competition since he debuted as a member of Group B. Boogie Woogie is definitely one of the ones to beat this season, as he’s given his all to each and every performance. His take on “I Believe In A Thing Called Love” by The Darkness was enamoring because it is not an easy song to sing. It’s full of high notes and sharp fluctuations, and Boogie Woogie nailed it all.
Boogie Woogie’s outfit was also right on theme for the hair metal-inspired hit, and he leaned into the part during his performance. It’s still unknown who’s under the mask, but there seems to be a Southern accent when Boogie Woogie speaks, despite the voice modulator. He’s also no stranger to performing, and this number was the proof.
The Masked Singerairs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. EDT on FOX.
