Noah Wylehas regained popularity with his lead role inThe Pitt, though this isn’t the first time he has played a doctor on TV, as he briefly did so in a beloved sitcom from the 1990s. Although Noah Wyle’s acting career has covered both movies and TV, he’s best known for his work on the latter. Wyle’s career began in 1990 with a minor appearance in the NBC miniseriesBlind Faith, and he made his big screen debut the following year in the drama movieCrooked Hearts.

Wyle’s big break arrived in 1994 when he was cast inER, which opened many doors for him and boosted his career. Wyle was one of the most beloved TV stars of the 1990s, and he has now regained popularity with his performance as Dr. Robby inThe Pitt. Created by R. Scott Gemmill,The Pittis a medical procedural drama TV series that follows attending physician Dr. Robby, who starts a shift in the emergency room of the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital. Funny enough, Wyle played another doctor in a beloved 1990s sitcom, shortly after joiningER.

Friends George Clooney as Dr Mitchell and Noah Wyle as Dr Rosen

Noah Wyle Played A Doctor In A Brief Appearance On Friends Long Before The Pitt

Just one year after joiningER, Wyle had a brief appearance onFriends. In season 1’s episode “The One With Two Parts, Part 2”, Monica (Courteney Cox) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) ended up in the hospital after Rachel slipped and fell off the balcony while taking down the Christmas lights, but her ankle got caught in the wire. At the ER, as Rachel had no medical insurance, she asked Monica to swap names so she could use hers. Monica reluctantly agreed, but after meetingDr. Mitchell (George Clooney) and Dr. Rosen (Wyle), they had to carry on with the lie.

“The One With Two Parts” wasFriends’ first two-part episode.

Rachel invited the “cute doctors” on a double date, but the girls couldn’t keep up with the lie believably, and ended up attacking each other, much to the doctors’ confusion. It all ended when Rachel’s father called, and Mitchell picked up the phone. As Monica was posing as Rachel, he handed the phone to her, who went on to make a confession to him about Rachel’s private life.Dr. Rosen and Dr. Mitchell didn’t appear again inFriends, but it was a fun mix between two of the best TV shows at the time.

The Actor’s Friends Appearance Is Even Funnier In Hindsight

Noah Wyle Has Become Best Known For His Roles As Doctors

Although Wyle and Clooney’s appearance onFriendswas very brief, it became one of the most memorable guest appearances on the show. The chemistry between Clooney and Wyle is undeniable, but at the time, the audience wouldn’t have guessed that their chemistry was also a comedic one. Wyle’s appearance onFriends, however, is now even funnier thanks to his role inThe Pitt, which is nothing like what he did as Dr. Rosen.

The Pitt’s Dr. Robby is sarcastic, blunt, and has little tolerance for incompetence, which makes total sense given that he works at the ER. Robby is also compassionate, always putting his patients’ well-being and health over anything else, and though his colleagues fear him (but also respect him), they eventually get to see his most vulnerable side and learn he’s very loyal and committed. Of course, not much is known about Dr. Rosen, but he was most likely a lot more relaxedthan Robby.

The Pitt & Friends Aren’t The Only Shows That See Noah Wyle Portraying A Doctor

Noah Wyle Rose To Fame Playing A Doctor On TV

Of course,FriendsandThe Pittaren’t the only times Wyle has played a doctor. As mentioned above,Wyle broke big when he was cast in ER, where he played Dr. John Carter. Carter was introduced inER’s pilot episode, and he started as a third-year medical student, later becoming a resident and finally being promoted to an attending physician. Wyle was part ofERfor 11 seasons, but he returned in guest appearances in four episodes of season 12 and five episodes of season 15, including the series finale.

Noah Wyle was the youngest member ofER’s original main cast.

Dr. Carter is one of the most memorable and beloved characters fromER, and Wyle’s success inThe Pitthas brought new viewers toER, prompting inevitable comparisons between his characters. It’s interesting how doctors have definedNoah Wyle’s career on TV, but his natural charm and acting skills have been key to making these characters so delightful and engaging.
