11.22.63

11.22.63, an adaptation of Stephen King’s 2011 novel,11/22/63, is a science fiction thriller miniseries starring James Franco as Jake Epping. When Jake is presented with the chance to travel back to 1960 to prevent the Kennedy assassination, he jumps at the chance to be a hero and fix his disappointing life.

It’s a complex and mind-bending series, as you would expect coming from a story created by King. There is a fantastic, moody, and supernatural atmosphere to the show that makes the science fiction elements appropriately unnerving. It’s a series that resonates across time despite its period setting.

The League Poster

The semi-improvised comedyThe Leagueis set in Chicago, Illinois, where a group of friends gathers together every year for their annual fantasy football league. The winner of the league gets a trophy and bragging rights, but those symbols of victory are enough to inspire backstabbing, plotting, and threats of bodily harm.

The Leagueis an absurd but hilarious look into the often boring, but somehow completely absorbing game that is fantasy football, with every kind of person represented inThe League’s fantastic collection of actors. It’s not exactly “smart,” but there’s a cleverness to the series underneath the childish pranks.

Fleishman is in trouble poster

Based on the 2019 novel of the same nameby Taffy Brodesser-Akner, who also created the miniseries,Fleishman Is in Troublestars Jesse Eisenberg as Dr. Toby Fleishman, a hepatologist, recently divorced from his wife Rachel (Claire Danes). Fleishman Is in Troubleadds two more degrees of difficulty to Toby’s efforts. He has two children whom he is now solely responsible for, and he’s also discovered dating apps, which have earned him a degree of romantic success he never thought possible. It’s an extremely relevant and quirky series, with several powerful performances at the center.

Alone (2015)

Out of all thepopular wildlife reality TV shows,Alonemay be the most “real”. In the series, a handful of self-proclaimed (and vetted) survival experts are dropped in remote locations, often in Northern Canada and First Nations-controlled lands, and are tasked with surviving for as long as possible.

Everyone is allowed a limited amount of survival equipment, given film equipment that they are required to use and send to the producers, and then, as the show suggests, they are left alone. These contestants are unbelievably capable of surviving just on their wits and the surrounding resources, making for a fascinating series.

Godfather of Harlem (2019)

One of themore underrated gangster TV shows,Godfatherof Harlemstars Forest Whitaker as Ellsworth “Bumpy” Johnson, a real-life Harlem mob boss. In the 1960s, after ten years in prison, Bumpy returns to his old stomping grounds of Harlem to find his corners controlled by the Italian mob.

So begins a mob war between the Genovese crime family and Bumpy’s family for control of the neighborhood. It’s a familiar series with a lot of the tropes found in many gangster TV shows, but Whitaker’s impressive performance elevates the series into something even more special.

Deli Boys TV poster for Hulu

Deli Boysstars Asif Ali as Mir Dar and Saagar Shaikh as Raj Dar, the two spoiled Pakistani-American sons of Baba Dar (Iqbal Theba), a multimillionaire businessman who dies in the first episode. The brothers quickly learn that their father was the head of a drug empire, and now they’re in the driver’s seat.

The fast-paced comedy series sees the brothers juggling the public-facing part of the business with the illegal side, often failing in both regards. The two leads have fantastic chemistry, and while the crime caper aspects are enjoyable,Deli Boysalways makes an effort to ensure that comedy comes first.

The Mick

The Mickis an extremely underrated show that deserved more than two seasons. The series stars Kaitlin Olson as Mackenzie “Mickey” Molng, a mean, foul-mouthed, and selfish con woman from Rhode Island who finds herself as the only adult in the room when her sister and her husband go on the run for racketeering.

They leave Micky with her niece and two nephews, and now, she has to change her life to accommodate her suddenly large family. Olson is fantastic as the lead, bringing both her wacky brand of intense, physical humor and a secretly warm heart that givesThe Mickmore longevity than you may suppose.

One of Hulu’s few original miniseries,Dying for Sexis a biographical series that stars Michelle Williams as Molly Kochan, a Los Angeles woman in an unhappy marriage. When Molly gets diagnosed with Stage IV metastatic breast cancer, she also begins taking tamoxifen, which increases her libido.

Molly comes to realize how much time she’s wasted and decides to finally break up with her husband and explore her sexuality with what little time she has remaining. Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate as Nikki Boyer are a wonderful pair, and the underratedHuluseries is upbeat and funny without taking away from the real-life severity of the situation.
