Despite its off-putting CGI, the anime perfectly balanced comedy, action, and romance, ending on a high note. However,Villainess Level 99has the potential for a second season.
The anime had a closed and original ending, highlighting that it was likely made only to promote its light novel, leaving little chance of a renewal. Nevertheless,Villainess Level 99’s light novelhas plenty of content for future seasons, and given the anime’s positive reception, fans shouldn’t lose hope for a second season in the future.
9Uncle from Another World
Even though it could be classified as a reverse isekai,Uncle from Another Worldfeatures an unconventional premise for the genre with its protagonist, Yosuke Shibazaki, returning to earth after being in an alternative fantasy world during his 17-year coma.Uncle from Another Worldis a hilarious anime that left fans expectant for another season due to its cliffhanger ending.
Unfortunately, unexpected delays due to production issues during its run made it more difficult forUncle from Another Worldto get a second season. Still, its popularity in Japan makes a renewal a possibility, but fans may have to wait forUncle from Another Worldto have enough content for a new season, since the manga has a monthly publication.
8Drifters
Drifters, the isekai anime by Kota Hirano, author ofHellsing, has had fans waiting for its continuation since the release of its OVA Strange Knight in 2018.Driftersfollows the story of Toyohisa Shimazu, a hero of the Sengoku era who was transported to a parallel world. Upon release, the anime was highly rated and hinted at a sequel.
However, the main reason whyDriftersseason 2 hasn’t premiered is the lack of content in the source material. The anime covered up to part of volume 5, and the manga has been published irregularly, with only seven volumes currently released, and the last coming out after a 5-year gap. This makes the wait forDriftersSeason 2 quite long.
7Problem Children Are Coming from Another World, Aren’t They?
Also known asMondaiji, this isekai anime could be considered the predecessor ofNo Game No Life, featuring three characters being sent to a world where challenges called Gift games are used to bet on everything, even a community’s flag and name. The anime was well-received among viewers, with Izayoi and Black Rabbit becoming popular characters in 2013.
Unfortunately,Mondaijionly lasted 10 episodes, which didn’t provide enough space to explore the story. Although theMondaijilight novel ended with 12 volumes, the sequel,Last Embryo, isn’t finished and is currently on hiatus. BecauseMondaijihas a lot of unadapted content and the series' popularity, a second season, or even a remake, isn’t impossible.
6Knight’s and Magic
Although there are several fantasy anime with touches of sci-fi and robots, there is a unique charm aboutKnight’s and Magic, making it one of the most underrated isekai.Knight’s and Magicbecame a must-watch for mecha fans, being especially compelling in the way the protagonist uses his knowledge and works to make technological advances in his new world.
The anime covered 6 volumes of the light novel, and with 11 volumes released so far,Knight’s and MagicSeason 2 may have enough story to adapt. So even though a second season hasn’t been confirmed, the possibility isn’t zero. Still, Eight Bit’s current focus onBlue Lockhints thatKnight’s and MagicSeason 2 won’t release anytime soon.
5So I’m a Spider, So What?
So I’m a Spider, So What?is a very fun isekai with a very eccentric protagonist who will do anything to survive. Despite Kumoko’s engaging personality and the anime’s absurd humor being entertaining, the excessive use of CGI and the declining animation quality in the final stretch of the anime put off viewers and hinted at possible production problems.
While this didn’t detract fromSo I’m a Spider, So What?’s status as one of the most original isekai, it may have contributed to the lack of interest in adapting the rest of the story, despite the anime’s open ending that left viewers wanting more. Furthermore, the light novel was completed in 2023, with no news regarding the anime.
4Cautious Hero: The Hero is Overpowered but Overly Cautious
Cautious Hero, the story of a pathological and excessively careful man, proved to be more than just a fun isekai, with a mind-blowing plot twist that left viewers speechless. The anime’s dark spin not only defied viewers' expectations but also built anticipation for a second season ofCautious Hero.
Following the anime’s first season, which only covered volume 1 of the light novel,Cautious Heroputs Seiya and Ristarte in a whole different setting. Sadly, althoughCautious Hero’s light novel hasn’t ended, it’s currently on an extended hiatus. Still,Cautious HeroSeason 2 might not be completely out of the question due torecent changes at WHITE FOX studio.
3rimgar: Ashes and Illusions
Widely regarded as one of the most realistic isekai anime,Grimgar: Ashes and Illusionsleft many fans craving more.Grimgar: Ashes and Illusionspresents a fantasy world unlike that of generic isekai, where the protagonists don’t possess overpowered abilities and are forced to survive a much harsher and more hopeless reality.
This intriguing, high-stakes, action-packed story still has many fans wondering if the anime will ever be renewed, especially since it only adapted the first two volumes of the light novel. WhileGrimgar: Ashes and Illusionshas gained more followers over time, it never enjoyed the same popularity as other isekai, making the likelihood of a season 2 rather slim.
2Hinamatsuri
One of thebest reverse isekai anime,Hinamatsuriwas one of the pleasant surprises for fans in 2018, thanks to its ridiculous humor and the dysfunctional yet charming dynamic between the characters.Hinamatsuriis more than just a generic comedy, being an anime that creatively and exuberantly mixes different genres.
Hinamatsuriepisode #12’s open ending felt like a lackluster conclusion because the season only covered until chapter #47 of the manga. While it’s safe to say there is more than enough source material for renewing the anime, due to the manga finishing in 2020 with 117 chapters, this also significantly decreased the chances ofHinamatsuriever getting a second season.
1No Game No Life
No Game No Lifecame out a decade ago, becoming one of the most popular isekai thanks to its attractive premise of a world whose conflicts depend on strategy and resolutions solved through games. As the story progresses, Shiro and Sora demonstrate that they have the intelligence to master the nature and rules of Disboard and one day challenge Tet.
However, its short duration didn’t allow the anime to fully develop its potential, making fans clamor for a second season for years.No Game No Lifeseason 1 adapted three volumes of the light novel, with its prequel film focusing on volume 6. Furthermore, the novel encompasses 12 volumes, indicating there’s enough material for a new season.
Although it wasn’t disclosed why the series wasn’t renewed, a second season ofNo Game No Lifecan’t be completely ruled out, as many sequels end up being released long after their first adaptation, such asThe Devil is a Part-Timer. However,No Game No Lifeseason 2 might not come in the near future due to Madhouse’s current projects.
